Today in our Where in the World series, we feature Rene Menjivar from Washington DC, USA

My interest in Darlington started in 2006, during my first year at university. A transfer student moved onto my floor at the dormitories and he and I started talking about football. He mentioned he was a fan of Darlington, which at the time played in League Two. At the time, the only exposure I had to English football was the Premier League, so I started following Darlington through social media and football related sites. Today, I keep track of the club through Facebook and Twitter. I also regularly check the club site.

I've seen the club play in person once, against Prescot in Prescot a few seasons ago (I actually got a round of applause from Prescot fans because I has taken a red-eye flight from DC to London then a train from London to Prescot that same day for the game). Some traveling Darlington supporters gave me a scarf and beanie, and I still wear these items whenever possible. The following week I travelled to Darlington to grab a club sweater. I am proud to be a fan of the club and hope to see the club play again in the near future. Attached is a banner I have at my home.

I was ecstatic when I learned the club had earned promotion. I was unable to follow the promotion (and title) clinching game due to work and then my own football game (I play rec league football three times a week for a couple of teams in the DC area), so I was unaware of the promotion until the following morning, when my friend (originally from Newcastle, but now lives in Singapore) shared a photo on my Facebook page showing the celebrations. It was the best (footballing) news to wake up to, and proudly shared the news with my friends. I won't say I have one favourite player, but I am a fan of Terry Galbraith as I also tend to play left back or left midfield for my teams.

I have not managed to convince anyone else to support the club, though a few of my friends do keep tabs here and there. They all think it is amazing that I do support Darlo, and that I've taken the time to fly out and watch a game in person. I'm hoping to see the club play again this year in September.
