Under 23s continue winning start against Blackfyne

Six wins now from six

Our Under 23s still have a 100 percent record in the Wearside League second division after beating Consett Blackfyne 4-0 on Wednesday night.

They now have six wins from six league games, and are third in the table, six points behind leaders Middlestone Moor with two games in hand.

Manager Grant Cuthbertson said; “It was a difficult game against a strong disciplined team who were difficult to break down. We continued with our game plan and they players were told to be patient and their moments would come, which they eventually did.

“It was a really strong performance rom the defence and midfield, and some cracking goals saw us run out winners in our hardest test of the season so far.”

The boys looked to continue their impressive starts to the season against a tall, physical Blackfyne side and with Kiro and Mortimer at the helm for their 2nd game in a row it was due to be an exciting fixture. Consett Blackfyne posed a very different test for the boys and a well needed one.

The first half started nervy with both sides resorting to long balls and shaky moments. Darlo came close on a few occasions, continually breaking the lines but were defied by the crossbar and post on several occasions. Consett Blackfyne rose well from corners but couldn’t get an effort on target. The first half played out to a 0-0.

Sparrow’s first half foot injury had him subbed off for Sekete who went into holding midfield and Walters pushed up higher. It took seven minutes to break the deadlock with an absolute wallop top bins from Jack Mortimer, no keeper was saving that.

Like we’ve seen when one scores the other follows, Kiro with the 2nd and some top drawer combination play with Mortimer upfront playing in the one-two with a smart finish at the end. Considering it was only their third game playing together, they’re building some really impressive chemistry and it’s resulting in a lot of goals.

Goal of the game was a testament to hard work, as Sekete won the ball in his own half before driving up the pitch and laying off Mortimer down the wing, followed up with a sprint into the box and an inch perfect ball from Jack landed at Jayden’s feet on the volley for 3-0. Class goal, class finish and all made by hard work. Mortimer doubled his tally shortly after to land himself two goals, two assists and a Man of the Match performance.
