Final pre-season friendly for Quakers

First visit to Whitby since lifting the EvoStik League title

Quakers play their last pre-season friendly when they go to the scene of one of the greatest nights in the club’s history on Saturday.

Nearly 2,000 Darlington supporters converged on Whitby’s Turnbull Ground in April 2016 to watch the team clinch the EvoStik League title with an exhilarating 7-1 victory with Graeme Armstrong scoring a hat trick. There’ll be a few memories being replayed for sure.

Darlington manager Alun Armstrong is looking for another encouraging performance on the back of the 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Wednesday night.

The team played some good football, especially in the first half, and there were plenty of positive signs.

Alun, who is still searching for more bodies to strengthen his squad, especially in defence, said; “There are still a few things to work on. I was pleased with the way that we created chances on Wednesday, and we played a good tempo for most of the game. I wanted more urgency from the players, and I got it -- but I must see it again.

“But we need to be tighter in defence and stop giving opposing teams too much space to cause us problems.”

There are no major injury problems, while triallist Andrew Nelson continued to receive treatment from Danny at training on Thursday.

Here's what Alun had to say after the Sunderland game in midweek:

It's a good excuse to show those goals again!

Whitby, who are jointly managed by Lee Bullock and Nathan Haslam, will probably include former Darlington centre half Jonny Burn, and striker Brad Fewster, who was on trial with us four seasons ago. They also include another former Darlington youth team player Coleby Shepherd. They were in action on Tuesday night, drawing 1-1 with Shildon.

Whitby are encouraging fans to buy tickets in advance and ease congestion at the turnstiles:

One word of travel advice: there is a big event taking place near Whitby on Saturday, so allow plenty of time to get to the town.

There are some car parks in the town, and there is a park and ride just outside. We urge you to park considerately.

Most of all, we want everyone to enjoy the day.
