Darlington left back David Ferguson enjoyed his first taste of playing for England C last month – and now he’s set his sights on more England caps.

Fergie, who was signed by Quakers in January from Shildon, was called up into the England C squad for games against the Punjab (Amar Purewal’s team) and Jersey over the spring bank holiday week, and he hopes that he’s impressed enough to earn more caps later in the year.

“Everything seemed to go really well,” he said. “I played every minute of both games, and I was captain for the second game against Jersey.

“We played against the Punjab at Solihull, and I set up the second goal in the 2-1 win.

“We then flew over to Jersey, and after training for a couple of days, we played Jersey and drew 1-1.

“All the way through, it was a great experience. It was all very well-organised and professional, and I was part of a good set of lads.

“The manager, Paul Fairclough, was a very good bloke – as were all his staff -- and I had a couple of encouraging chats with him. I really want to force my way in to England C again in the qualifying rounds for the European Championships in the autumn. I want to be available for selection again, so I suppose it’s down to me..

“There were some lads from Lincoln City in the squad, but obviously now they’re in the Football League, so there’s a big chance for me.

“From a personal point of view, I want to do really well with Darlington to give myself a good chance of selection for England.”

Fergie was back at training with Quakers last Tuesday night , just three weeks after his England appearance and he said; “I’ve managed myself well and kept fit after the Jersey trip, so considering that the other lads had been off a month longer than me, I was delighted that I was first in the bleep tests and the sprints in training!”
