Quakers were knocked out of the FA Cup by Gainsborough at Blackwell Meadows.

Quakers led at one stage with a goal by Will Hatfield, but the NPL side hit back through Delan Howe, a former Darlington player, and Lewis Butroid.

Quakers won a free kick on the right in the opening minute, Joe Leesley curled the free kick over, the keeper and a defender got in each other’s way, and Jarrett Rivers’ header back towards goal was headed away by a defender.

Jack Maskell was fouled on the left in Quakers’ next attack, but Matty Cornish’s setpiece was held by Dylan Wharton.

Gainsborough had an escape when Rivers played the ball forward into the Gainsborough area, and Lancaster almost knocked the ball past his advancing keeper, who just held on to it.

Gainsborough tried a long throw from the right on 14 minutes, but Andy Evans got his head to it and got the ball away.

Quakers created a half chance on 19 minutes when Hatfield played a 1-2 with Cornish on the edge of the area, but Hatfield couldn’t quite control the return ball.

Rivers got to the bye line on the right on 28 minutes and put in a teasing cross which Hatfield couldn’t get to, but Leesley picked the ball, turned, and had a near post effort saved by Wharton.

Alex Payne was fouled about 30 yards out on 33 minutes but Hatfield’s free kick went into the wall.

Quakers took the lead on 37 minutes. Will McGowan played a good ball down the right inside the left back for Rivers to pull back into the six yad box for Maskell to have an effort blocked, but the ball came out for Will Hatfield to roll into the bottom left corner.

But Gainsborough levelled from their first real chance on 41 minutes. A corner was curled over from the right for former Darlington player Declan Howe, completely unmarked, to head past Peter Jameson

Quakers won a corner just on half time, and when it fell to Rivers, he had a shot blocked.

Half time:

Darlington 1 Gainsborough Trinity 1

Quakers had their first chance of the second half when Toby Lees made a good run forward and played the ball to Maskell, who laid it off for Cornish to fire over the top.

Scott Barrow then had a shot blocked before Gainsborough broke away and won a corner at the other end which Quakers dealt with.

Quakers made their first subs on the hour, Kallum Griffiths and Andrew Nelson coming on for Cornish and Evans.

Gainsborough won a free kick on 63 minutes about 30 yards out that Fraser Preston put over the bar.

In turn, Quakers got a free kick on the left which was curled in by Leesley for Nelson to head over the top.

Quakers nearly scored when Leesley found McGowan with a good crossfield pass, and he played the ball back for Payne to cross into the middle where Rivers just failed to head the ball.

Then Griffiths crossed from the right for Maskell to head just over the bar.

But Howe made a good run down the right that got him round the back, and his low cross was pushed away by Jameson.

Quakers then took Leesley off and sent Archie Small on after 85 minutes.

But Quakers lost the ball in midfield on 86 minutes allowing Gainsborough to break, and Lewis Butroid fired across Jameson into the net for the winner.
